How does a battery work without solar panels?
Without solar panels there is no solar power of your own to store. The battery charges with electricity from the grid and releases it to your home later. Any benefit can come from shifting consumption to cheaper hours, from exporting at more expensive moments, or from flexibility services through a provider. Which options you have depends on your contract and on the battery system.
The role of your energy contract
On a fixed or variable contract your supply rate does not continuously follow the current wholesale price. Some contracts do have separate day and night rates. On a dynamic energy contract the electricity price can change every hour or quarter of an hour. A smartly controlled battery can then try to charge when electricity is cheaper and discharge or export when it is more expensive.
Keep in mind that price differences change from day to day. Energy is lost when charging and discharging, and wear, fixed costs, taxes, supplier mark-ups and any service costs also affect the result. A positive return is therefore not guaranteed.
Who might it suit?
- households on a dynamic contract who can actively shift their consumption;
- households who can use flexibility or trading services through a suitable provider;
- homes where solar panels are not possible but storage is wanted for another reason.
